Mammoth Networks Signs 40th Wholesale DSL Partner
Gillettte, WY (ContentDesk) December 8, 2005 -- Mammoth Networks confirmed it has signed its 40th Partner to the company's wholesale DSL platform.
Mammoth provides access to the company's private network, allowing Partners to sell Digital Subscriber Line to End Users without the expenses of operating a network. The company's success has relied on providing wholesale DSL while leaving control of the End User's DSL line to the Partner.
Mammoth began offering services in March of this year with little fanfare, allowing news to spread word-of-mouth through a network of agents."This week has been exciting for us," says Brian Worthen, who oversees product development at Mammoth.
"When we drew up this 'Mammoth' plan, we anticipated this growth over a two year period.
It turned out we would achieve this in nine months."Worthen went on to explain that Mammoth is operated as a subsidiary to Visionary Communications, a company that has achieved success in the Rocky Mountain region
for the last decade.
As a result, Mammoth has the stability of operating as part of a larger company, and does not have the pressures of a startup organization.Mammoth offers wholesale access to their network in nine Western states, and covers fourteen telco boundaries, called LATAs.
The company refers to itself as a Provider's Provider - a company that enables Internet Service Providers to sell internet services without their own network.
This has allowed Mammoth's Partners to deliver DSL, frame relay, and other data circuits outside the Partner's coverage area.Traditionally, if an Internet Service Provider wanted to provide coverage in another LATA, they had to provision fiber from the telephone company in the new coverage area.
The Provider then had to tie that fiber back to their network.
Those expenses made it difficult for a Provider to justify expansion into new markets outside their original coverage area.
The Provider was forced to incur an up-front and ongoing expense, while building their business one customer at a time.
With Mammoth, a Partner can be profitable with a small amount of End Users.Mammoth Networks is an aggregator of data services serving nine Western states.
Mammoth enables its Partners by erasing the invisible lines of the telecommunications structure, and leveling the playing field for service providers.
The privately-held company is based in Gillette, Wyoming..
DSL
Digital Subscriber Line, abbreviated DSL, is a technology that brings high bandwidth information for businesses and homes over copper telephone lines. A digital subscriber line can deliver information hundreds of times faster than ordinary dial-up modems, thus reducing the time needed to download data files, web pages, animations and graphics. Generally, the download speed of DSL ranges from 128 kbps (kilobytes per second) to 6000 kbps. The change in the download speed depends on the DSL technology and service level implemented.
DSL is a broad term that consists of various variations - SDSL (Single-line Digital Subscriber Line), 1.5 Mbps; Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), ranging up to 1.5 Mbps; Very high-data-rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL), ranging up to 2.3 Mbps; High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL), 1.5 Mbps; and Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (RDSL), diverse speeds.
A digital subscriber line facilitates separate channels...

WiMAX Facades Unsullied Challenge to Broadband and DSL
In the US a technology known as WiMAX is being conceptualized that will make high-speed wireless Internet services available in areas much larger than a typical Wi-fi coffee bar. These wireless hotspots would match the size of Philadelphia or a rural community in the American heartland.
WiMAX would be developed to spread Internet facilities across cities, using radio networks with much wider ranges than Wi-fi, a system available in coffee shops. However, it is questionable how far this service would be commercially viable.
Once WiMAX is in force, some broadband operators already have plans to use it as a way to expand their networks, and city administrators are ready to offer broadband services cheap in public places such as parks or low-income housing areas.
WiMAX which should be capable of delivering 50 megabits to 100 megabits per second is therefore much superior to DSL and cable. Analysts therefore believe...

DSL Service
DSL services are provided through a line sharing method, that is, DSL services are provided on the same line as that of the subscriber's voice service. As there is no need for an additional line to receive a DSL service, there is usually no need for a technician to complete the installation. Most DSL broadband services utilize Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE software) software to get an IP address and connect to the Internet. Generally the PPPoE software given by the service provider is compatible with all the major operating systems on the market. That is, Windows 95/98, 2000, NT 4.X, ME, XP and Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9, and Mac OS X.
Subscribers are required to obtain a 10Base-T (Ethernet) network interface card (NIC) installed in their computer.
